During the early 1990s Audi first introduced the S4 as the performance version of the re-styled 100 sedan. After Audi dropped the 100 line in 1994 and re-lined the car as the A6 the S4 became the S6 - changes to the model were minor cosmetic updates and the addition of a more powerful S6 Plus model to the lineup.
Release 2 of the Audi S4 appeared in 1997 as part of the B5 platform A4 line-up, although the S4 was no longer available with a V8. Instead the S4 had a 2.7T twin-turbocharged V6 engine at 261 hp in European trim. The engine was detuned to meet US emissions regulations with power being restricted to 247 hp in USA. Production ended on the B5 S4 in 2001.
Currently, the B5 S4 is considered the most powerful of the S4 lineup. As a turbocharged car, significant power gains can be made by simply upgrading the engine management software. By replacing the K03 turbo with the larger RS4 K04 turbo, Audi tuners can easily increase power to the 450 hp range.
Release 3, the B6 platform Audi S4 appeared in mid-2003 and became available in three body styles for the 2004 model year - S4 sedan, S4 Avant , S4 Cabriolet. The 2.7T engine was replaced by the 4.2 V8 unit from the A8. The B6 platform S4 was replaced by the B7 platform S4 in late 2005.
The Audi S4 B7 platform is the current version - the differences between it and the previous B6 S4 are primarily cosmetic. Audi made a few significant changes, such as adding new springs to the suspension and re-calibrating the Quattro-system. The new grill, narrow headlamps, and quad exhaust tips distinguish the B7 from the previous B6 model.
