The BMW E46 platform is the fourth generation of the highly successful 3 Series. Introduced in 1998 (1999 for the US), the E46 first replaced the E36 sedans with coupe and touring versions appearing in 2000. In 2004 the E46 underwent a slight facelift which included redesigned headlights and a new bumper. Also claimed, was a stiffening of the chassis compared to earlier E46s. By mid 2005 the E46 sedans were giving way to the new E90, while the E46 coupes, cabriolets and M3s, as of June, 2006, remain in production. With a huge market success, the E46 was widely accepted as the performance benchmark of its class.
