The BMW Z3 was a series of firsts - the first BMW to be produced in the USA; the first mass production roadster and the first to appear in a Bond movie. Developed from the E36 3 series platform featured trailing arm based suspension from the older E30s and a poorly performing 4-cylinder 1.9L engine. BMW Z3 got the much needed 6-cylinder upgrade during 1997 with standard 2.3 and 2.8 engines on offer. During 2001 the Z3 was upgraded again to reflect the newer 2.5 and 3.0L engine configurations. An M version of the roadster featured the 3.2L 6-cylinder engine found in the M3 and can be distinguished by the more aggressive 4-exhaust tail section, wider wheelbase and fenders. In addition to the roadster, BMW released the hard-topped version the Coupe. The Z3 Coupe also received the M treatment. All of the Z3 coupes came with the 6-cylinder engine. M versions of the coupe featured featured the E36 M3 engine for 99 and 2000 and subsequently switched to the S54 E46 M3 engine in 01 and 2002.
