The BMW E39 M5 unlike its previous versions, was not hand built. Instead, it was manufactured on the same production line as the standard 5-series. The BMW E39 M5 was first released in October 1998 and a little over twenty thousand were produced. BMW M built three versions one of which was the USA spec version.
The BMW M5 is fitted with a high performance V8 engine. Designated as S62 the engine was based on the M62 and weighed in at 4.9L producing 400hp. The M5 engine featured variable valve timing on both intake & exhaust and throttle butterflies for each of the cylinders. This produces a much faster engine response and is used on the M3.
The E39 M5 also featured a stronger clutch and a shorter ratio limited slip rear differential. The M5 suspension was also modified to reduce spring rate with added size roll bars and stronger shock absorbers.
The M5 production run included some minor cosmetic upgrades including the popular Angel Eyes and Jewel tail light revision.
The revised E60 M5 was introduced during late 2004, although models are only beginning to arrive in the USA during 2006. The V10 engine is derived from the Formula One version and revs to 8250 rpm. The Formula One V10 version exceeds 20,000 rpm - I need one of those.
