Mercedes SL Tuning Background The Mercedes SL Class, short for Sport Leicht (Sport Light), was first introduced in 1954 as the 300 SL. More recent versions such as the R129 and current R230 have stayed true to that sport-performance side of Benz. In the U.S., only the more powerful SLs were available. The R129 6 cylinder cars were available from 1995 until 1998 when importing of them ceased, leaving only the V8 SL 500 and the V12 SL 600 in the U.S. lineup. AMG began to tune the SL Class as early as 1995, but very few SLs carried an AMG badge in the R129 chassis. One of these extremely rare SLs was the SL73 AMG that was powered by the same 7.3 liter V12 that was later used in the Pagani Zonda. A total of only about 300 SLs were tuned by AMG before 2003. The R230, which began production in 2001, is still only available to the U.S. market with V8 and V12 power plants. These SLs ranging in power output from 300 to 612 hp are offered in the forms of the SL 500, SL 600, SL 55 AMG and very limited SL 65 AMG.
