BBS Wheels - Background

BBS Wheels - known as some of the world's leading quality wheels.  However, the elegant and stylish designs are simply the visual referrence of the what really makes BBS wheels amongst the best.  What you do not see, the production process, is what makes BBS Wheels one of the most respected and in demand manufacturers throughout the world.

 

BBS Wheels began it's technically advanced production of wheels for touring car racing during the Seventies.  BBS became widely recognized throughout motor sports for the ability to manufacture some of the top race proven products.  Wheels that do not compromise build integrity for weight optimization quickly become high demand products.  BBS Wheels has perfected various use of technologies for the production of various BBS wheel styles and very effectively set them apart from their main competitors both on and off the race circuit.

 

Standard wheel manufacturing processes have a finite limit to the level of wheel performance they can deliver for a specific wheel weight.  The BBS Wheels Flow Forming and BBS Wheels Forging processes have made it possible to produce high quality exceptionally well engineered performance wheels that are also very lightweight. BBS Wheels commitment to safety, quality and performance goes far beyond any of the recognized quality standards. In many cases the BBS Wheels standard is 10 times greater than that required by TUV.  High levels of engineering skill, better use of manufacturing technologies and extremely well-trained production staff are necessary to build lighter and stronger wheels.

 

BBS was recognized as Entrepreneur of the Year during 2004 by Ernst & Young for it's production facilities in Germany.  BBS Wheels has more than 1,200 employees and a very strong presence in the light wheel production market. BBS wheels are considered one of the most recently successful companies in Germany.

 

Today, BBS continues to transfer race car technology and race-bred performance to road wheels designed for the latest high-performance luxury automobiles.  BBS continues to set new standards, aiming to significantly cut-down the weight of wheels while ensuring absolute concentricity, a perfect balance, and the stability the BBS reputation is renown for.

 

BBS - Flow Forming

Flow Forming is the special manufacturing process that forces the unfinished wheel (or rim section) under extreme pressure over unique mandrels and hydraulic controlled rollers.  The process of applying pressure while rotating forces the rim area to conform to the manderel shape thereby creating the form and width of the specific BBS rim being manaufactured.  During the Flow Forming manufacturing process, the wheel rim section "flows” down to produce the full width of the rim.

 

Is the Flow Forming process a big deal?  Yes - during Flow Forming process, signficant pressure is applied to the wheel rim.  The mechanical properties of the material change during the pressurized process significanly improving the wheel strength and resistance to everyday use.  Flow Formed wheels maintain deformation resistance numbers that are similar to those of a BBS forged wheel. When compared to a cast BBS wheel, the flow forming manufactured wheels show a weight saving of approximately 15%.


BBS uses the Flow Forming production process to manufacture the CH and RC series of 1-piece wheels and in the production process for wheel rim sections on various multiple piece wheels such as the RXII.

 

BBS - Wheel Forging
More recently forged wheels have become very popular,  The term forged has been over-used for aftermarket wheels.  Forged wheels are not all created equally - the same is true for cast wheels.

 

To correctly forge a BBS wheel requires over 16,000,000 lbs of forge pressure and a multiple production stage process.  The wheel starts from a 6000 Aluminum billet or a special BBS Magnesium wheel alloy. The various stages of production being optimized with the goal of creating ultimate forged wheels.

 

Lightweight aluminum wheels can deliver better driving performance.  However, producing lightweight wheels without compromising wheel reliability or longevity is not as simply achieved as many of the more recent wheel companies would have you believe. The market is swamped with wheels promising light weight, low cost and risky designs.  Many of these wheels are simply not strong enough to survive the demands of the poor quality of roads today or the real world of driving. BBS forged wheels have been engineered to standards that will confidently handle all road and driving environments safely.
